Scientific sessions

Neuroscience, also known as Neural Science, is the study of how the nervous system develops, its structure, and what it does. Neuroscientists focus on the brain and its impact on behavior and cognitive functions.

Neurological disabilities include a wide range of disorders, such as epilepsy, learning disabilities, neuromuscular disorders, autism, ADD, brain tumors, and cerebral palsy, just to name a few. Some neurological conditions are congenital, emerging before birth.

They include Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), among many others. They're most often slowly progressive and interfere with thought, memory, movement or some combination of these things. They're more common in the elderly.

The specialty of neurosurgical care includes both adult and pediatric patients. Dependent upon the nature of the injury or disease a neurological surgeon may provide surgical and/or non-surgical care.

Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behavior. Its subject matter includes the behavior of humans and nonhumans, both conscious and unconscious phenomena, and mental processes such as thoughts, feelings, and motives.

Behavioral neuroscience, also known as biological psychology, biopsychology, or psychobiology, is the application of the principles of biology to the study of physiological, genetic, and developmental mechanisms of behavior in humans and other animals.

Mental retardation, also known as intellectual disability, is a condition that affects a person's intellectual ability and their ability to adapt to their environment. It's characterized by below average intelligence and skills for daily life, and can occur in children and adults. The condition is diagnosed when someone's IQ is significantly below average, and they have limitations in at least two areas of adaptive functioning, such as communication, academic skills, or social skills. Mental retardation can range from mild to severe, and there are five general categories: borderline, mild, moderate, severe, and profound.

A brain tumor is an abnormal growth of cells in the brain or skull that can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Brain tumors can develop in many areas of the brain, including the brainstem, sinuses, nasal cavity, and skull base. There are over 120 different types of brain tumors, depending on the tissue they originate from.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), also known as electroshock therapy, is a psychiatric treatment that uses a small electrical current to induce a brief seizure in the brain to treat severe mental illnesses

Alzheimer's disease is a type of dementia, which is a group of symptoms that affect cognitive abilities. Alzheimer's disease is a progressive brain disease that damages the brain and causes dementia, which is called "Alzheimer's disease dementia". Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia, accounting for 60–70% of cases.

Neuropharmacology is the study of the effects of drugs on the nervous system, aiming to develop compounds to benefit humans with psychiatric and neurological disease. Human neural progenitor cells.

Psychiatry is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Psychiatrists are medical doctors (M.D.s or D.O.s) who specialize in mental health, including substance use disorders. They evaluate patients to determine if their symptoms are due to physical illness, a combination of physical and mental ailments, or strictly mental issues.

Pediatric neurology is a medical specialty that focuses on diagnosing and treating neurological conditions in children from newborns to adolescents. Pediatric neurologists, also known as child neurologists, help children with disorders that affect the brain, spinal cord, nerves, muscles, and blood vessels. These conditions can pose unique challenges due to the development of the pediatric brain. Pediatric neurologists are essential in helping children achieve the best possible outcomes and quality of life.

Brain injury rehabilitation is a process that helps people with brain injuries recover as quickly as possible by using the brain's natural healing abilities and relearning processes. The goal of rehabilitation is to help people regain basic skills and learn new ways to compensate for permanent changes to their abilities. This can help people perform daily activities safely and independently, and transition back to their home or into other forms of rehabilitation.

Stem cell therapies also might benefit people who have aplastic anemia, immunodeficiencies and inherited conditions of metabolism. Stem cells are being studied to treat type 1 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, heart failure, osteoarthritis and other conditions.

Our group applies computational models to study changes in motivation, memory and decision-making that occur in neurological disease. We combine behavioural, neuroimaging, and pharmacological experiments to apply mathematical models to clinical problems.

Parkinson's disease is a brain disorder that causes unintended or uncontrollable movements, such as shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with balance and coordination. Symptoms usually begin gradually and worsen over time.

Diagnostic testing: These can include an electroencephalogram (EEG) to measure your brain's electrical activity. Evoked potentials testing assesses the transmission of nerve signals to your brain. Imaging tests: CT, MRI and PET scans provide detailed images of your brain.

A mental disorder is characterized by a clinically significant disturbance in an individual's cognition, emotional regulation, or behaviour. It is usually associated with distress or impairment in important areas of functioning. There are many different types of mental disorders.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a type of neuromodulation, which is a treatment that alters the activity of nerves. Vagus nerve stimulation involves implanting a device that sends regular, mild pulses of electrical energy to your brainstem through your vagus nerve in your neck.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a neurosurgical procedure that involves implanting electrodes in the brain to treat certain conditions. The electrodes produce electrical impulses that can affect brain activity and the cells and chemicals that cause medical conditions. DBS is most often used to treat movement disorders associated with Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and dystonia, as well as epilepsy. Doctors may use DBS when medications become less effective or have side effects that interfere with daily activities.

Neuro-oncology involves the diagnosis and treatment of tumors of the central nervous system, as well as metastatic and nonmetastatic neurological complications of systemic cancers.

Neurology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study and treatment of disorders of the nervous system. The nervous system is a complex, sophisticated system that regulates and coordinates body activities. It has two major divisions: Central nervous system: the brain and spinal cord.
